Building a Sustainable Indianapolis Metro Region

I have turned in to a hyper-obsessive recycler.

Actually, one might more accurately call me a compulsive trash saver.

Yes, I throw out some food wrappers which aren't recyclable. But just about everything else I use ends up in one bag or box or container somewhere downstairs. I've got a cabinet full of pizza boxes, cardboard boxes and packaging. My garage is spilling over with glass, aluminum and #1 and #2 plastics.

I'm now looking for a compost bin that I can put in the garage, too. (My condo HOA won't permit an outdoor compost bin.) I've read about redworm containers that take care of all the foodstuff that makes up most of the trash that actually makes it into the giant trash bin.

Anyone got ideas for composting and/or recycling in a small condo?

If you need more info....

http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/homecomposting/basics.html

I went up to the Chicago Center for Green Technology in November and got a pamphlet on composting. It was excellent info and I still refer back to it. The same type of info is in the website listed above.

Good luck!

I love my worms!!

I have been keeping worms for compost for about a year and a half. I first tried them because I was living in a one bedroom apartment on the second floor with no hope of having a compost pile. They have turned into an easy and rewarding project!

My parents actually made me a bin for my worms. It is just a 4'x2'x1' wooden box and works great. I'll post some pictures of the setup on my page. One neat idea that I have seen is to take a big Rubbermaid container and drill holes in the bottom and sides for drainage. I use straw, cardboard, and newspaper (black and white only, the colored paper has poisonous dyes in it!) as the bedding for the worms and then ad all of my vegetable peels and other compostable materials. I worry about keeping worms in your garage due to the temperature fluctuations. I keep mine in the house and the only issue I have had is in the summer with fruit flies.

My houseplants love the worm castings (poop) it is an amazing fertilizer! When you get your box ready let me know and I'll get you some worms!

Funny thing - it turns out the friend I was referring to, Renee, is actually in this group if you want to ask her about composting yourself. But here is the information she shared:

My vermicomposter and worms came from Worm's Way (near Bloomington) - http://www.wormsway.com/detail.asp?sku=WORMK. They're doing really well, making lots of great "soil" for my spring planting! They're very low maintenance.

Good luck!

A woman I met in a Low Carbon Workshop I took last fall talked about getting stackable compost bins with worms from the Bloomington area. She stored them in her Laundry Room in her apartment. Somewhere in my class notes, I wrote the website for the company she brought them from, so I'll look for it and email you what I find out!

I'm trying to find a good shower head that reducing water and also allows the water flow to be turned on and off during a shower - any suggestions?
